This set of three original nautical charts of Long Island Sound, dated 1855, is from the U.S. Coast Survey collection. These charts were intended for navigational purposes by sea captains and included information relative to tides, soundings, lighthouses, sailing directions with noted danger areas and other pertinent data. The western sheet includes an inset in the upper left corner of the area including Throg’s Neck to the City of New York. The eastern sheet extends to include Block Island and the entrance to Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. All three charts have views of the approach into various harbors. These charts are tinted and in good condition with some minor foxing on the fold lines. The framing is done to conservation standards with an attractive burl wood frame.
